General Team Information

What is the AZ Inferno Climbing Team?

The AZ Inferno Climbing Team is a competitive and non-competitive junior climbing team for kids between the ages of 8 and 18. Head coach, Joe Czerwinski, is the only USAC accredited coach in the State of Arizona. Together, the coaching staff has over 35 years of climbing experience and over 20 years of competition experience. We can help your son or daughter become a better climber, whether it is for recreational climbing, or a nationally ranked competitor.

Mission:

To provide a safe and fun environment that encourages the development of positive attitudes, values and character.

Objective:

We will help your son/daughter become a great climber, as well as a great person. We teach the kids how to work toward their specific goals with dedication, perseverance, commitment, and hard work. We strive to provide opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t exist for the kids, and help them understand the greatest discovery comes from realizing their own potential.

Getting Started on the Team:

If your son/daughter is interested in joining the team, here is what you have to do. Contact Joe Czerwinski, schedule a time (Tues/Thurs from 4-7pm) to drop in and let the coaching staff see your son/daughter climb in order to make sure he/she is placed in the right branch of the team. After all the paperwork has been processed, you are ready to go!

Gear:

Necessary gear includes shoes, harness, locking carabiner, chalk and chalkbag. For your comfort and convenience, these items can be purchased through the TUFA Gear Shop.

Team Apparel:

The AZ Inferno Climbing Team has obtained sponsorship from Madrock and Voodoo Climbing/Crashpads. After one month on the team, all kids will receive:

  • Team t-shirt/tank top.
  • pro-deal pricing on all Madrock shoes (pro-deal pricing is approximately 20% below wholesale).

Competition:

The governing body for competitive climbing is USA Climbing (USAC). Their website is www.usaclimbing.org. This organization oversees both the Bouldering or ABS series and the Sport/Speed Climbing or SCS series.

The bouldering competition season usually begins in October. Your child must join ABS if he/she will be competing in the bouldering series. You can become a member by clicking here. This is an annual membership & you must renew every year in order to compete. Plan on joining or renewing prior to the first bouldering comp. Climbers must compete in 2 competitions in order to be eligible to compete in the ABS regionals, usually scheduled in January. Placement in regionals determines qualification for Bouldering Youth Nationals, which takes place in February, around President’s Day.

The sport climbing competition season usually begins in January. Your child must join SCS if he/she will be competing in the sport climbing and speed climbing series. This is an annual membership & you must renew every year in order to compete. Plan on joining or renewing prior to the first difficulty comp, or if your child is competing in both ABS & SCS, you may join both at the same time. The AZ Inferno compete in the Southwest Region. Climbers must attend 3 competitions in order to be eligible to compete at regionals, which are usually the 3rd weekend in May. Placement at regionals determines who attends divisionals, usually 3-4 weeks later in mid-June. Placement at divisionals determines who attends nationals, usually right around July 4th. Speed climbing competitions run in conjunction with the rope competitions, and are usually not held until regionals &/or divisionals and are a timed race up the wall.

Not to be confused with the AZ Inferno Climbing Team divisions, USAC uses letters as well to designate age categories. In other words, your child is competing against kids close to him or her age. Their designations are based on the age your child turns in the year that Nationals are held. For the 2008 Bouldering & 2009 Sport Climbing Series, the age designations are based on the age your child turns in 2009.
